Belize points with pride to a 200 mile long barrier reef, second in size only to the Great Australian Barrier Reef. The reef provides a home for millions of colorful tropical fish. The underwater world of the reef made famous by Jacques Cousteau offers a dazzling display o unspoiled beauty. Conch, lobster and other delicacies abound in the calm waters behind the reef.
For the more serious and professional, the Great Blue Hole of Belize has long been a source of wonder to sea-going folks. It is found inside Lighthouse Reef, one of only four atolls in the Western Hemisphere (3 of the 4 are in Belizean waters). Inside the confines of the surrounding reef, the depth ranges generally from 12 - 20 feet. The diameter of the nearly circular blue hole is a quarter of a mile and it is believed to be almost 450 feet deep. The depth has been a matter of debate and conjecture over the years. Jaques Cousteau went down in a submarine several years ago and tried to determine the depth with sonar. Due to the conical shape of the sonar transmissions, they bounced off the sides and hopelessly criss-crossed, making it virtually impossible to get an accurate reading.
Dive trips to the blue hole are at least an all-day project and sometimes an overnight with a campout. This is a dive that elevates the status of any diver's log book!
